The Donkey That Spoke

Bible Verse
“And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?”
— Numbers 22:28 (KJV)

Ellen G. White Quote
“Often the workings of Providence seem strange; but they are designed to bring us into right relation with God.”
— Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 441

Reflection
Balaam was a prophet. The donkey was not. But when Balaam rushed ahead ignoring warning signs and divine boundaries it was the donkey who saw the angel, not the prophet.
And God, in mercy, opened the donkey’s mouth.
This odd story reminds us that God can speak through anything or anyone even the lowliest creature, even something we’d never expect. And sometimes, the interruption we’re frustrated with might actually be divine intervention.
Has something in your life slowed you down, blocked your plans, or made you pause? Don’t dismiss it. Don’t beat the donkey. Look again. God might be trying to protect you from what you cannot yet see.
God’s voice is not always loud or expected. Sometimes it sounds like interruption, inconvenience or even a donkey.

Closing Prayer:
Lord, Open my eyes to what I’ve been missing. Help me not to rush past Your warnings or resist Your redirects. Speak to me in unexpected ways, and give me the humility to listen even when the voice comes from a place I didn’t plan. Amen.
